The High-Dollar Blues

The broad trade-weighted dollar appreciated by nearly 10% in relative price-adjusted terms between April 2014 and April 2015. Thus far, the current episode of dollar appreciation is small relative to historical experience, although certain factors have created other difficulties for manufacturers. Barring any significant surprises, markets will continue to believe that the U.S. Federal Reserve will be the first major central bank in the world to tighten policy; such a belief favors dollar strength.
